Federation Starship
USS Augusta Ada NCC-55011
she dreams of the future...
The U.S.S. Augusta Ada meets monthly!
We've had a number of "docking runs" to the meetings of other
Starfleet vessels:
the U.S.S. Simonov
- Fairfield region, no longer active.
Cascade Station
- Redding
U.S.S. Tikopai
- San Jose/Saratoga.

AIDS Legal Referral Panel
- Mission coordinates provided by:
our Redshirt (now transporter bait, first class), Josh.
- They had an aging core computer on the brink of chronometric
disaster. IN other words, their Novell system just wasn't going
to make it past Y2K.
- We replaced it with a Linux core system offering filesharing,
ip masquerading, and other deflector shielding.
- As an experiment, it showed we don't have
enough hands to really replace major projects that focus on
providing that sort of help -- but it gave us an opportunity to
contribute towards an interesting and important defense for
AIDS victims who are being hassled with legal problems. These
are good and well-deserving people and we wish them all the best.
Internet Lounges
- Mission coordinates provided by:
Comp Ops, Heather Stern.
- Only a few of us served in a helpful capacity at the 1999
Baycon. By 2001 we are in
charge of it and members of other conventions are asking if we have
an interest in either helping them or establishing one for them.
BayCon, Bay Area regional science fiction convention
Memorial Day Weekend, annual
- This organization holds an annual conference to promote
knowledge and friendship among fans of science and speculative
fiction. Each year it holds an auction to support a different
major charity and hosts a very well attended blood drive.
- Corporate Support:
We've had support in the past from Sprint, Linuxcare, VA Linux
Systems. (If interested in providing corporate support please
contact us at a Baycon staff meeting or email
ops - our crew's Computer Operations team - at
starshine.org.)
Pervasive Netwerks
has been especially supportive for the lounge through the years.
- Private Support:
We are aided by members of the local Linux User Groups,
CABAL and
Linuxdojo.
- Systems:
We have had mostly Linux-based PCs, and a couple of Apples. In 2003
the percentage was the other way around.
- Next Time:
Come to Baycon staff meetings if interested in joining the netlounge
away team.
ConJosé, World Science Fiction Convention 2002
Labor Day Weekend
- The annual event "Worldcon" is in a different city throughout
the world each year. It exists to promote literacy and the sharing
of knowledge -- both fantastical and real -- among science fiction
fandom worldwide. This one was local to us, in the
San José city center.
- Corporate Support:
Pervasive Netwerks,
S.C.I.F.I and
Sun Microsystems.
- Private Support:
We were aided by members of Linuxdojo, CABAL, and the local sysadmin
group BayLISA.
- Systems Present:
We brought machines running Linux for the most part, and one
instance of the Borg (for blind/impaired vision users; apparently
they have the best speaking terminals). We had intended to also use
a large batch of SunRays but the core server wasn't ready in time.
- Next Time:
We haven't been asked to serve additional Worldcons, yet. It's a
lot of fun but requires a lot of private funds outlay for attendance
and a bigger computer setup.
FanimeCon, annual Japanese animation and manga convention
June 20-22, 2003
- This organization holds an annual conference to promote
Anime (Japanese animated films) and Manga (graphic novels and
comic books). Although these use the same techniques as our
Saturday morning cartoons and Sunday funnies, the stories can
be as dramatic as any movie or ongoing soap opera. Of course
ray guns and mystical powers may be more plentiful...
- Corporate Support:
Apple Computer.
- Private Support:
We may be aided by Linuxdojo.
- Systems:
a roomful of Linux based PCs.
- Next Time:
We won't be running this in 2004,
due to timing conflict with Baycon; FanimeCon moved to Memorial
Day Weekend when they accepted a good offer from the San Jose
Convention Center.
Consonance, annual Northern California filk music convention
First Weekend of March, annual
- Filk music is a special breed of American folk music,
although it's worth noting other countries have Filk as well.
Filk is what science fiction and fantasy fans sing with each
other... yes, there are quite a lot of Star Trek filksongs.
- Support:
We expect this to be a solely U.S.S. Augusta Ada mission.
Please contact Comp Ops if interested in providing support for this event.
- Systems:
A small number of Linux machines providing basic web surfing and
mail access. We'll have a printer.
- Next Time:
We've been invited back for 2004. Plans to have filk radio
playing (see Filk.Com)
SiliCon, Bay Area regional science fiction convention
Labor Day Weekend, 2004
(mostly annual, dates vary)
- A regional convention for the autumn timeframe, attracting
fans from throughout the San Francisco greater bay area.
- Support:
This will be our first year at Silicon; if you'd like to help
out you should attend either Silicon staff meetings or join
the USS Augusta Ada and express interest in becoming a part of
our netlounge away team.
- Systems:
We expect this to be a PC based netlounge; probably Knoppix based,
but we may have some BSD systems as well. Too far ahead to be sure.
