The U.S.S. Augusta Ada meets monthly!

=========================
The universe is what you make of it...
As a research vessel many of our crew are involved in community projects -- either within our local area (San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley) or among the people worldwide who support free software.

Why get involved in nonprofit and charity work? Well, ponder this. The 24th century has advanced medicine, but Kirk remained allergic to the best eye treatment for his time. Geordi La Forge was born with a birth defect. We don't have replicators to generate food for everyone on this small world of ours, even if we thought we had the energy ... and neither do the worlds of the Federation, since they actively farm, and explore new grains to improve their yield. Any small thing you could do might make a difference!
MAIN ENGINEERING:  Chief Engineer: Steve "Dillo" Okay   Ship's AI:  MI/BUS
+The Ency Reader
MI/BUS (Ship's AI) got really annoyed with the reader that comes "Federation Standard" with the CD versions of the Star Trek Encyclopedia. This more resembles a search engine interface than a nice wrapper for the data, but don't worry about that. Someone else wrote a GNOME front end for his reader, too.
+Grandma
Dave Benfell (Captain) found that he needed a mail delivery agent more capable of helping him wipe out spam.
+Linux Gazette
Heather Stern (XO) and Jim Dennis (Fleet Intelligence) are two of the editors for this monthly web-based magazine, aimed at "Making Linux A Little More Fun!" Sometimes its articles are also useful for BSD users, and other UNIX folks. A part of the Linux Documentation Project.
*GEORDI
General External Operator's Remediation and Diagnostic Interface
It, ummm... runs on a Visor. Not to mention a handful (ow! more bad puns!) of other PDAs. Gale Pedowitz (Science Officer) and 'Dillo (Chief Engineer) wrote a paper for the USENIX LISA 2001 conference, about GEORDI, a sysadmin interface for use on handheld devices. No, it's not our fault that Terra chooses to name its tricorders after a different diagnostic gadget.
+Freenode
Previously, Open Projects Network. Rob 'lilo' Levin (Xenologist) maintains this IRC network dedicated towards more of a conference room or workspace atmosphere than the usual meander-in-and-out and inane chat lounge of other IRC nets. Many open source developers use it to keep in touch worldwide.

[Ken Parker]
Every research station or vessel is as good as the best library it can access :) We used to meet at the Larkin Street branch, before we moved to our current location.
=USENIX
[about half the crew are members]
USENIX is an organization that promotes academic studies in the world of computing. They maintain cross cultural exchange programs and numerous conferences. Many notable people in computing are longtime members.
